How to Renew your License

Roseland Amateur Radio Club

Renewing your amateur radio license is a straightforward process. Follow these step-by-step instructions to ensure a smooth renewal:

Step 1: Verify Your License Expiry Date

  1. Check the expiration date on your FCC-issued amateur radio license. Licenses are valid for 10 years from the issue date.
  2. The FCC allows you to renew your license 90 days before it expires.

Step 2: Gather Necessary Information

Before starting the renewal process, have the following information ready:

  • Your FCC Registration Number (FRN).
  • Your account login credentials for the FCC Universal Licensing System (ULS).
  • A valid email address (required for FCC notifications).

Step 3: Access the FCC Universal Licensing System (ULS)

  1. Go to the FCC ULS website: https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsEntry/licManager/login.jsp.
  2. Log in using your FRN and password.
    • If you’ve forgotten your FRN, use the FRN search tool.
    • If you’ve forgotten your password, use the Reset Password feature.

Step 4: Initiate the Renewal

  1. After logging in, click on the “My Licenses” tab.
  2. Locate your amateur radio license in the list.
  3. If your license is eligible for renewal (within 90 days of expiration), a Renew button will appear. Click it.

Step 5: Review and Update Information

  1. Confirm that all personal and license information is correct.
  2. Update any outdated information, such as your mailing address, if necessary.

Step 6: Pay the Renewal Fee

  • As of 2024, the FCC charges a $35 application fee for license renewals.
  • Payment can be made electronically via:
    • Credit/Debit Card
    • Bank Transfer (ACH)
    • Other methods listed on the FCC website.

Step 7: Submit the Application

  1. After payment, review your application one final time.
  2. Click Submit to complete the renewal process.
  3. You’ll receive a confirmation email from the FCC with details about your application.

Step 8: Check the Status

  • Use the FCC ULS License Manager to monitor your application’s status.
  • Most renewals are processed within a few business days.

Step 9: Verify the Updated License

  1. Once approved, your renewed license will be available in your FCC ULS account.
  2. Download and print a copy for your records.

Special Cases

  • If your license has already expired, you have a 2-year grace period to renew it. During this period, you cannot operate on amateur bands until the renewal is complete.
  • After the grace period, you must take the exams again to get a new license.
